In the intensive care unit, care teams face a constant challenge: to maintain their patients in an optimal state of sedation, neither too light at the risk of inducing a sudden and traumatic awakening, nor too deep to avoid complications and unnecessarily prolong the awakening phase. This situation requires constant monitoring and frequent adjustments to medication doses, generating a significant mental workload for medical staff.
Against this backdrop, the Alison++ project marks a major step forward in the field of digital health. Led by a consortium includingUTBM, Besançon University Hospital and Cisteo Medical, this project aims to transform the management of sedation and analgesia in intensive care, thanks to artificial intelligence.
A look back at the kick-off meeting held on September 15.
On September 15, 2025,UTBM welcomed the partners in the Alison++ project to its CRUNCH Lab in Belfort for an official launch ceremony. Researchers, doctors, institutions and industrial partners came together to present this major digital health initiative.
This highlight underscored the richness of the regional consortium and its shared ambition to transform patient care in intensive care thanks to artificial intelligence.
Beyond the technological presentation, this meeting was also an opportunity to reiterate the importance of a rigorous ethical and regulatory framework, particularly in anticipation of the entry into force of the European AI regulation (AI Act) scheduled for August 2027 for this type of device. A proactive approach that reinforces the credibility and sustainability of the project.
As Professor Guillaume Besch (PU-PH, Professeur Universitaire Praticien Hospitalier) points out , "analgesic sedation in intensive care is to be distinguished from surgical intervention; the aim is to create a state of artificial coma to make a treatment work, to create a situation conducive to drug administration."
This approach requires the simultaneous management of two families of drugs: hypnotics for sedation and analgesics for pain management.
It's a delicate balancing act. If sedation is too light, it exposes the patient to sudden and traumatic awakening; if it is too deep, it unnecessarily prolongs the awakening phase and increases the risk of complications. Today, caregivers must manually adjust medication doses, often every hour, which represents a major mental burden and constantly mobilizes them.
This is where Alison++ comes in with an innovative solution: an intelligent system capable of analyzing patient physiological data in real time and automatically adjusting treatments.
The Alison++ project is based on two complementary systems:
This integrated system enables dynamic personalization of treatments, reducing risks for patients while lightening the workload for medical teams.
The Alison++ project illustrates the power of collaborative innovation. It brings together :
This synergy between research, clinical practice and industry enables us to pool skills, risks and investments, while speeding up the development of concrete solutions tailored to the realities of the field.
Institutional support reinforces this collaborative dynamic. ERDF funding from the Burgundy-Franche-Comté Region, support from theARS and the France 2030 pilot region label are creating an ecosystem that is conducive to innovation in digital healthcare.
With Alison++, the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region has established itself as a pioneer in digital healthcare.
At the kick-off, Christophe Moureaux, President of Cisteo MEDICAL, highlighted the strong partnerships that the SME has maintained since its creation with the Besançon University Hospital, the CIC and the UTBM.
True to its commitment to making innovation a top priority, Cisteo MEDICAL is regularly invited to join French and European consortia. These strategic collaborations help to advance technologies, projects and, more broadly, the entire medical device industry.
For Cisteo Medical, involvement in Alison++ is a concrete way of putting its expertise at the service of an ambitious regional project. It's also an opportunity to contribute, alongside leading local players, to an innovation that puts patient comfort and safety at the heart of its priorities.
